Decks/Balcony/Railings
new and replacement, pressure treated wood, Composite Decking and Vinyl Rails
Decks/Balcony/Railings
Deck materials generally fall into three main categories: natural wood (like cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine), composite (a blend of wood fibers and plastic, often capped for protection), and PVC/Plastic (pure synthetic, highly durable).
When to Consider a New Deck (Replacement)
- Widespread Damage: Rot, mold, soft spots, or extensive warping across many boards and joists.
- Structural Issues: Unstable beams, shifting, or a sloped deck indicates deep problems.
- Safety Concerns: Non-compliant railings, stairs, or loose components that pose risks.
- Age & Wear: Older decks (wood especially) often have reached the end of their lifespan.
- Modernization: Wanting better materials (composite, PVC) for less maintenance, updated codes, or a new design
When to Consider Resurfacing/Repair
- Localized Damage: Only the surface boards are affected (minor cracks, stains).
- Good Structure: The underlying frame (joists, beams, ledger board) is solid and sound.
- Budget Constraints: Repairing is significantly cheaper upfront than a full rebuild.
- Newer Decks: Composite or PVC decks have longer warranties, so check if issues are covered
Wood Decking
Wood remains a classic choice for its authentic look and feel, though it generally requires the most upkeep to prevent rot and weather damage.
- Pressure-Treated (PT) Wood: Budget-friendly pine chemically treated to resist rot; requires staining/sealing and maintenance as it can warp or splinter.
- Cedar & Redwood: Naturally resistant to decay and insects, offers a classic look but is more expensive than PT wood.
Composite Decking (Trex)
Composite boards are engineered from a blend of wood fibers (like sawdust) and recycled plastics. These boards can last 25 to 50 years with minimal maintenance beyond occasional cleaning
- Capped Composite: A popular choice; made from recycled wood/plastic with a protective outer layer (cap) for enhanced stain, fade, and mold resistance.
- Uncapped Composite: More affordable, made from wood/plastic blend, but less resistant to stains and fading
PVC & Plastic Decking
These materials contain no organic wood fibers, making them highly resistant to moisture and mold.
- Vinyl: Similar to PVC, often used for low-maintenance decks and railings
New vs. replacement scope: A new deck offers a fresh start with modern materials and code compliance for safety and longevity, while a replacement is often more cost-effective long-term than repeated repairs
